new york

Last week, Satomi and I took a quick trip to New York.  Work is a little chaotic at the moment, but Satomi is moving back to the west coast this week (so bummed) and we were running out of time!  I'm really glad we went, because it was a perfect holiday.  We stayed with Satomi's awesome cousin in her beautiful apartment, ate lots, and didn't rush our sight seeing.  I only took my camera with me on one day, when we took the harbour ferry from Williamsburg to DUMBO, walked across the Brooklyn Bridge, ate at Smorgasburg, and wandered around the new waterfront park a bit.  As well as revisiting old favourites, we managed to find tons of new stuff to see/eat as well, which was nice.  Here's a list of highlights, in case you're looking to head there yourself!

-DUMBO waterfront park & bridge walk, plus there is a great bookstore down there and a Mexican bar
-Strand bookstore (cookbooks anyone?  Plus I found a copy of Drape Drape!)(we may have ended up in this part of town to check out Trader Joe's....)
-Vanessa's Dumplings (crazy cheap and soooooo delicious)
-aaaand, right down the street is Babycakes!  Desserts for all!
-Spritzer bar in the Lower East side had an awesome selection of beer on tap, plus there are tons of bars around there, so you're bound to find one you like
-shopping in SOHO, mostly for Purl and Muji, but I guess there is other stuff too
-a walk around the lake in Central Park (you'll feel unfit compared to everyone passing you)
-Two Little Red Hens bakery for their incredible Brooklyn Blackout Cupcake.  Just trust me on this one.  And it's close to the park, so you can eat your cupcake on a bench and then try to work it off (haha)(or get stomach cramps....)
-the MOMA, always something new and awesome
-Wythe Hotel bar in Williamsburg, it has such an incredible view of the whole city
-Wythe Hotel or Walter Foods if you are looking for a pricier but worth it dinner
-Momofuku milk bar - that was a really good pork bun
-Marlow and Sons for drinks out

Is that an out of proportion amount of eating?  Probably, but we walked a lot! You get hungry!

  1. Dumbo is one of my favorite places to visit! I was supposed to go there a few weeks ago but after the hurricane went through we weren't sure what the clean-up was required so we stayed home. Can't wait to go back and visit!

    1. I was a little worried about the post-storm damage too, but the city was totally up and running (at least wherever I was).

  3. Eating is probably one number 1 thing when traveling! There are usually cheap options and it gives you a cultural perspective. Glad you had a good time in NYC. It's been a few years for me, and I hope to get back there sooon.
